The Couples at ZPC
Couples are referred to the Zaban Paradies Center (ZPC) through numerous social services agencies in the Atlanta area. The Center maintains strong partnerships with other non-profits and agencies to help find permanent housing for its residents as well.
Each residential season the Center houses approximately 50 couples. As residents secure access to permanent housing, they move on with the help of the staff. Programming is still available to residents even after they have moved into stable housing.
The Center
ZPC has 20 private rooms for couples, housing up to 40 residents at a time. The center has several shared spaces which are used for workshops, counseling, relaxation, and quiet reflection. The center also has a kitchen, laundry facilities, and a computer lab.
Being a part of a supportive community is one of the positive aspects of life at ZPC. Couples are able to enjoy dinner and center activities together. Couples participate in weekly groups and workshops designed to build and develop them mentally, emotionally, and financially. Couples contribute to the well-being of the community by assisting with facility care and treating staff, other residents, and volunteers with respect and dignity.
How We Do It
Volunteer support is essential to the success of the Center. Volunteers with diverse backgrounds, interests, and skills provide a variety of services including delivery of evening meals during the Residential Services Program and portable lunches year-round for program participants, facilitation of life skills, job readiness, and financial literacy groups, and planning of special resident and fundraising events.
In addition, as an independent non-profit, financial contributions are critical to the Center’s ability to fulfill its mission.
The History of ZPC
The Zaban Paradies Center for Homeless Couples (originally called the Temple Night Shelter for the Homeless) was founded by members of the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation in 1984 as the first and only shelter for homeless couples in Atlanta.
The Zaban name was added after a few years, as an acknowledgment to Erwin Zaban‘s part in funding the addition to the Selig building. The mission of the Center was to keep couples together as they moved from being homeless to finding permanent places to live. The Zaban Paradies Center provides year-round support for homeless couples but opens its door for its residential season from mid-October through the end of April.
In 2008, the shelter became an independent non-profit and was formally named the Zaban Couples Center. Additionally, the mission expanded to provide, not just a safe place to eat and sleep, but also numerous services to assist couples in the process of moving from homelessness to independent living.
In 2015, the Center was renamed the Zaban Paradies Center for Homeless Couples after the generous donation from Rick Paradies in memory of his father, Dan Paradies, a long time supporter of the Center.
